IIT – IIM left crore-paying job only to work as security. But, why?

At a time when finding a good job has become a scarce commodity, and that too a crore-paying job. Thinking, about quitting a job and taking a risk (not knowing if it will work or not) is like hitting you leg with a hammer. Believing it won’t hurt you.

This is exactly what Abhishek Kumar, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and IIM-Ahmedabad. Who once held a prestigious role as vice president at Goldman Sachs did, leaving aside his high-paying job to work as a security guard for 14 hours a day.

His motive was clear: to deeply understand ‘the real-life problems faced by guards” before coming up with any tech-based solution.

From quitting a high-paying job to security

To understand the problem of a security guard, he had to experience it firsthand; for that he became a security guard, observing the problem and taking the notes. He saw “how security handled 50 calls a day and maintained visitor records by hand, despite all these security guards received complaints from residents.”

Idea behind MyGate

It started way back in 2016, when Vijay Arisetty, a Shaurya Chakra awardee and former Indian Air Force pilot, predicted a shift towards smart, secure, and connected residential societies in India.

Their goal was clear: make residential security smarter, simpler, and more efficient, not just for residents but also for guards.

My Gate Success story

Today! MyGate, a security and community management app, is being used by over 4 million residents in 25,000 + housing societies across India. Later, he was joined by Shreyans Daga (an IIT Guwahati and ISB alumnus); they formed the team that would launch MyGate.

The app has various features like digital check-ins, visitor tracking, delivery management, and much more. The app has helped security to manage things better.
